Coalition punished in local elections
Following the local elections last week, the results show the coalition's honeymoon period is officially over. Labour gained 450 seats as the electorate made their feelings known. Boris Johnson's re-election as London Mayor was the only consolation for David Cameron's Conservatives.
Current political commentary is now focussed on why the electorate is so disillusioned with the coalition. Most speculate that government cuts, a lacklustre budget, growing unemployment (particularly of the young) and a failure to have connected with 'middle England' to be important factors.
Today, the Queen's speech appeared to support this commentary as a list of bland parliamentary bills were rolled out in succession. Can Cameron and Clegg really expect voters to get hot under the collar about Lords reform or tinkering further with flexible working hours? I think the answer is NO.
Voters care about shrinking wages, pensions, jobs, crime, their kids education and the rising cost of food and fuel to mention a few real world concerns. The governments list of legislative plans include an Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill, Banking Reform Bill, Groceries Adjudicator Bill, Small Donations Bill, Energy Bill, Draft Water Bill, Pensions Bill, Public Service Pensions Bill, Draft Local Audit Bill, Children and Families Bill, Draft Care and Support Bill, Electoral Registration and Administration Bill, House of Lords Reform Bill, Crime and Courts Bill, Defamation Bill, Justice and Security Bill, Draft Communications Bill, European Union Bill, Croatia Accession Bill, Same Sex Marriage Bill, Recall of MP's, Overseas Aid, Higher Education Bill, High Speed Rail and Regulation of lobbyists.
And if that lot doesn't get the economy going.............

Institute of LicensingThe Institute of Licensing (IOL) conducted a consultation with members of the trade, regulators and users of taxis which resulted in the publication of the IOL Taxi Reform Report in January 2011. The reports aim was to address some of the current challenges faced by different groups of stakeholders and goes on to suggest reform of the taxi trade to address some of the issues. The IOL website quotes its Chair, James Button to have said, “This report is the culmination of almost three years hard work by a dedicated team of volunteers, to whom I express my heartfelt thanks.. It is the first time that opinion on taxi use and legislation has been canvassed so widely and impartially, and it presents a picture of a vital urgent need for reform, to benefit the public, businesses, and regulators. I urge the Government to look at this archaic area of public safety regulation as a matter of priority.” The report was then presented to the Transport Committee and the Department for Transport (DFT). You can find out more information on the IOL's website. The Law Commission are also due to begin a consultation on taxi regulation in May 2012. The Law Commission website says that its review of the current framework of taxi and private hire regulation should lead to proposals for a consultation.
